Restarting This Log!

So it’s been 5 years since I last posted … sheesh. In reviewing those initial posts from 2015, made some slight revisions, and I actually did accomplish what I originally set out to do … paint for 100 days in a row. Vaguely recall getting quite a few projects rolling along, as examples … the 40mm AWI , the 28mm Greek Hoplites, and some of the 28mm Persians. I certainly have been enjoying the hobby since then, although haven’t focused on doing anything with this log. So it is time to get back to it, and see how it could move forward from here.

100 Days of Painting … Day 5 to Day 10

Day 5 to Day 10 has been all about doing at least a little bit each day to keep the streak moving forward.  Initially this wasn’t easy, found myself as usual, tired at the end of the day, or just sneaking in something to make sure I kept the overall effort going.  The focus has been on 40mm AWI, and primarily on 12 British being painted as New Jersey Volunteer Loyalists.

Making progress, and taking things one stage at a time.  I’ll thin some paint, finish it up, and then do the same the next day, and this has seen me slowly expanding the number of figures being worked on from 3 up to the 12.  As is often the case with uniformed figures, my mind strays to wanting to start on the possible variety provided by doing something like the dozen Colonial Militia that I had started with their faces and hands on Day 1.  But today, I’m continuing with the British, and likely into the immediate future as well.

Also, I’m looking forward to getting back to some 28mm Greek Hoplites that I had been doing previously to represent some mercenaries for my Late Achaemenid Persian army for the Impetus rules system.  And there are the 15mm “By Fire and Sword” Cossacks that I’ve cleaned and affixed to 18″ slats of wood for priming first.  And there are some 25/28mm ACW, 30YW, WotRs, and at some point a return to my GW Empire figures, too.  My enthusiasm is growing as 11 days are complete, only 89 more to go!

100 Days of Painting … Day 2 to Day 4.

It’s four days into my “100 Days of Painting”.

Day 2 saw me picking up 3 early GW halflings that I’d primed a couple weeks back, and applying some base color to them.

After having taken some 15 to 20 years off from the military miniatures, and upon the death of Gary Gygax in early 2008, I found myself curious as to what was going on in the hobby.  I walked into a few independent hobby stores, and discovered how much GW’s products had become a part of such stores’ business.  There were folks playing WFB and 40K inside these stores, yet this really wasn’t what I was looking for even though I had some experience with fantasy figures and gaming back in my youth.  I was more interested in finding historical figures and gaming.

However, these stores weren’t selling, nor involved with historical gaming, but my interest to begin painting and playing again had begun to return.  I began exploring the world of WFB, bought some paints and some Empire figures (because I liked the variety of figures that looked relatively historical), and began to once again experience some of the joy I had when first introduced to the hobby back in my younger days.  Since the beginning of my return to the hobby, my interest in WFB increased, even dabbling in 40K, yet as I began to rediscover the historical side of the hobby, and encountered the release of the 8th edition of WFB that wasn’t really to my liking, I gravitated back towards historical miniature painting and games.

And so I hadn’t painted fantasy figures in at least a few years.  Yet the change that GW has made in ditching WFB almost entirely, as it transforms itself in favor of a new set and style of rules, as well as new figures for their fantasy line, this has brought a new bit of focus for me on to a few projects that hadn’t been completed previously.

Then came Day 3, a Monday, and most folks are aware of what it can be like going back to work week routine.  I got up and didn’t include painting figures in my morning activities as I had hoped.  There seemed to be too many things fighting against starting an intended new piece of my morning routine.  Which means I found myself at a moment during the end of the day, where it was all I could do to move myself forward towards painting on the third day, as intended for this 100 day journey.  However, it didn’t take long for me to not want my task to come to an end that quickly, and so I picked up some 25/28mm gun carriages for some wooden ships’ cannon barrels, and put some paint on them.

Day 4 brought me placing the cannon barrels onto the carriages.  Yet I became disappointed with being able to see mold lines on them, after having put paint on them previously, and began the process of removing the eye sores, and thus also causing me to repaint the barrels as my painting for the fourth day.  Another weekday project, which although not much to it, just enough to keep the short streak alive for the other days in front, where I hope to wack away more on projects like the 40mm AWI and 28mm halflings of my first two days.  And other items, too!

100 Days of Painting … Day One!

Today is the day my “100 Days of Painting” starts.

At the time of typing this, I’m still in the process of beginning to learn the site software, and determining how it will initially look.  Once further progress on that has been made, then I’ll set this internet site so that it can be seen publicly.  At some point, I hope to start adding photos along the way.

In the meantime, the “100 Days of Painting” has begun.  This morning I decided that this would start with putting some paint on my 40mm AWI figures.  This is being done in honor of my father who introduced me to this hobby when I was in 4th grade, and we painted up some 54mm AWI for a small diorama of the skirmish between British soldiers and colonist militia at the Concord North Bridge in Concord Massachusetts.

In this case, the figures are made by the Miniature Service Center (MSC).  I had started doing some British further back, and today I have started some Colonial militia.  I enjoy the sculpting of these figures, there seems to be some good character presented, and the painting of these metal figures seems to flow smoothly.

Welcome to … The Meandering GamesPoet!

This is my first attempt at creating my own website.  I plan to make posts regarding my hobbies and travels thru life.

I had been considering something like this for awhile.  Then the idea of wanting to make an attempt at doing something for 100 days in a row flowed into my life, and I decided that it could be good to give a go to a “100 Days of Painting” effort, and recording at least some of it on a log.

One of my hobbies is painting and playing games with military miniatures.  For a good length of time I’ve been buying figures for various eras in history, and doing various modeling and painting projects for this.  These hobby projects are in various stages of development, and I’m thinking that this could help move some of them along with a concerted commitment of time and effort being made to accomplish them.

Not sure how all of this will move forward, yet off we go …
